UAE To Introduce 'Face ID' Technology In The Pilot Phase To Replace Paper Documents
UAE announced in its cabinet meeting to use the ‘facial recognition’ technique or Face ID in public and private organizations to replace the traditional documents system. The project will be undertaken in its pilot phase in UAE. The focus is to develop the in-service delivery sector in the country to facilitate the service to the general public with ease.
Facial recognition or Face ID technology is being used since the year 2017 when iPhone X came up with this new concept. Nowadays, most industries and government offices have biometric devices to identify their employees and for attendance purposes too. Even online entertainment industries like the gaming and gambling sector are also using facial recognition technology to help users use the selfie app for the registration process. Moreover, a few online casinos like NetBet will be using this technology to help their customers with the documentation process.
Face ID aims to ease the work of the public and private organizations along with the users. It will help provide in-services to the public at any place and at any time. There will be no more need for traditional documents and submissions to the required authorities. The decision to introduce Face ID in UAE private and public sectors came after the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai, ‘His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’, chaired the Cabinet meeting on 14th February 2021. The project will be introduced in UAE in the pilot phase to measure its performance and success.
According to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, “In the Sunday meeting, we approved the use of facial recognition technology for verifying the individual’s identity. This will avert the citizens from submitting a lot of documents. This initiative by the government will be expanded if it will prove successful in the pilot phase.”
It is stated that the Interior Minister of UAE gave this proposal. The Interior Ministry will expand the use of FACE ID after its trial is complete. Moreover, this service of facial recognition technology will be applied to a few private institutions during the pilot phase. In the Sunday meeting, the cabinet also approved forming the new team for automating the government work through the use of remote communication applications.
The Vice President of UAE, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, tweeted, “The future of the public and private sector work will be different. In the coming years, automation will be the key to working.”
Moreover, during this cabinet meeting, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed also stressed the success of the ‘Hope Probe’. He stated that Hope is a result of the persistence and determination of the Emirati youth. The Vice President further stated that Hope Probe is a historic milestone that will mark the beginning of the coming 50 years for Dubai. Morover, the facial recognition technology will be introduced on the public transport system in Dubai to prove helpful and safe during the Global Expo exhibition.
