Significance Of Banyan Tree In Sharjah History Highlighted In Sharjah Fort

Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn), part of Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA), on Monday, has organized the fourth edition of Al-Hisn in Memory, a cultural program that focuses on the emirate’s landmarks.

Titled “Al-Rolla Tree: An Umbrella for Tolerance and Co-existence”, the half-day event brought together Emirati historians, researchers and artists, who discussed the significance of the Banyan tree (Al-Rolla in Arabic) in Sharjah’s history.

The latest edition of the cultural program also emphasized the importance of Al-Rolla square as one of the oldest destinations in the emirate of Sharjah.

During the event, participants covered seven themes including Al-Rolla, a transit station for Emiratis from across the country; an introduction of Al-Rolla tree, and Al Rolla tree, a symbol of tolerance.

In addition, Al-Rolla was highlighted as a source of inspiration for poets and a meeting point for people from Sharjah and the region.

Examples of activities that took place in Al Rolla square, such as selling goods including Findal (boiled sweet potato), Nakhi (roasted chickpeas), Namlet (soft drink), and the try your luck games, were showcased during the event.

The last two themes spoke of Al Rolla as a living memory from the past.

A presentation about the history of the area, a poem about Al Rolla by Al Resalah American school students and a number of activities mimicking the lifestyle that prevailed in previous years, concluded the event.
