HBKU's College of Islamic studies Journal of Islamic ethics first to be accepted for Scopus-indexing in Qatar and the Middle East

First academic journal on islamic ethics globally now included in prestigious academic database

The Journal of Islamic Ethics, established by the Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) at the College of Islamic Studies (CIS), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), has become the first Islamic studies journal in Qatar and the Middle East to be accepted for inclusion in the prestigious Scopus index of peer-reviewed journals.

Pioneering on several fronts, the Journal of Islamic Ethics, which is published by Brill, the Netherlands-based international academic publisher, has the distinction of being the first academic journal on Islamic ethics globally. It is also the first humanities journal edited by HBKU to be indexed by Scopus.

Scopus is the most authoritative abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature in the world, including scientific journals, books, and conference proceedings. Managed by Elsevier, all publications in the index are rigorously vetted against the requirements for initial indexing, such as academic contribution to the field and quality of content, and are re-evaluated each year.

Dr. Emad El-Din Shahin, Dean of CIS, said: “Achieving Scopus indexing is an outstanding achievement, and reflects the high caliber of articles published by the Journal of Islamic Ethics. I am confident that the recognition will greatly contribute to the visibility and rankings for HBKU in general, and CIS and CILE in particular. More importantly, this milestone promises to help expand their global reach for disseminating critical research in the nascent field of Islamic ethics.

“I would like to congratulate the CILE team and the international editorial board for their extensive efforts and important review work since the inception of the journal in 2017, and all our authors for their support. We look forward to even greater efforts to support this research field.”

Dr. Maurits van den Boogert, Publishing Director at Brill, adds: “We are very happy that the Journal of Islamic Ethics has been accepted in Scopus. This is a tribute to the efforts of the journal’s editors, both at CILE and outside Qatar, who work hard to publish the highest level of scholarship in the journal. We very much look forward to continuing our collaboration with HBKU and CILE in the future.”

The Journal of Islamic Ethics focuses on the ethical approaches embedded in Islamic philosophy, theology, mysticism, jurisprudence, as well as Islamic civilization and their intersection with applied fields such as bioethics, economics, education, and others. It was created by CILE to offer an academic podium for innovative research output in Islamic ethics. It is published in Open Access.

The journal will be accessible via Scopus soon after the acceptance.

CILE is one of several research centers based at CIS, launched in 2012 as a center specializing in Islamic legislation and applied ethics.
