Queen Rania Of Jordan Tells CNN Her Hopes For #MeToo In 2018

As part of CNN’s coverage of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Richard Quest interviews Her Majesty, Queen Rania of Jordan about our ‘fractured world’, the #MeToo movement and achieving gender parity.

Queen Rania on the #MeToo movement:
“I’m hoping we can look at 2017 as the turning point, as a year we’ve given new voice to an age-old issue. We’ve got a lot of work to do. It’s not enough to just talk about these things. We need to move from breaking the silence to generating actual, tangible actions.”

On our ‘fractured world’:
“When it comes to politics, our world is fractured. But when it comes to everything else, our world has never been more interconnected. Our conflicts are now borderless and they’re mobile. As a result, there’s a lot of fear. It’s a rational reaction but fear invokes irrational thoughts and behaviours, so it affects your decisions. People are strong forces of destruction, whether social, economical or political.”

On who is to blame for the fractures:
“Fear can be a very dangerous thing and when you have politicians that feed into that fear. It can be very divisive in societies and really undermine social cohesion and harmony, and that’s something that we need to look out for. It’s a short-term agenda that gives results very quickly, but over the long term it’s very destructive and counterproductive for any society.”
